One of the most common questions we receive from international golfers planning a South African trip is: when should we come? The answer, refreshingly, is that South Africa is a genuinely year-round golf destination. But the optimal timing varies significantly by region, and planning your tour around the right window for your chosen courses makes a meaningful difference to your experience.
Cape Town and the Western Cape
Best months: April to October
Cape Town's climate is Mediterranean — warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. For golf, this is slightly counterintuitive: the best golf conditions are actually in the autumn, winter and spring months (April to October) rather than the peak summer season.
Here's why: Cape Town's summer (November to March) brings the notorious south-easter wind — a powerful wind that can make exposed courses like Milnerton and Royal Cape genuinely challenging and occasionally unpleasant. The autumn and winter months (April to August) are typically calmer, clearer and cooler, with excellent course conditions.
April is particularly special — the vines turn golden in the Winelands, the summer crowds have gone and the courses are at their best.
Hermanus and the Arabella Golf Club fall into the same weather pattern, with the added bonus that whale watching season (August to November) coincides beautifully with excellent golf conditions.
The Garden Route
Best months: Year-round, avoid January–February
The Garden Route enjoys one of South Africa's most temperate and consistent climates. With average temperatures ranging from 17°C in winter to 26°C in summer and moderate rainfall spread throughout the year, it is the most forgiving region for golf timing.
Fancourt, Oubaai, Pinnacle Point and the Garden Route's other great courses are playable and enjoyable in virtually every month. The one period to approach with caution is January and February, when afternoon thunderstorms and stronger south-westerly winds can interrupt play.
The Garden Route is also significantly less crowded than Cape Town, making it an excellent choice for golfers who want world-class courses without the peak-season tourism pressure.
Johannesburg and Gauteng
Best months: April to September
Johannesburg sits on the Highveld at 1,750 metres above sea level, giving it a climate quite unlike the coastal regions. Summers (October to March) are warm to hot with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms — a daily occurrence from November through February that regularly interrupts afternoon tee times.
Winter (May to August) in Johannesburg is dry, clear and sunny with mild daytime temperatures — excellent for golf. The Highveld winter produces some of the clearest skies and most perfect golf days in South Africa. Morning temperatures can be cold, but by mid-morning conditions are typically superb.
The Country Club Johannesburg, Steyn City, Houghton and the other great Gauteng courses are at their very best in the dry winter months.
Mpumalanga and Leopard Creek
Best months: April to September
The lowveld region surrounding Kruger National Park and Leopard Creek has a subtropical climate — hot, humid summers with significant rainfall, and dry, warm winters that are ideal for both golf and safari.
The dry winter months (April to September) are universally the best time to visit. Game viewing is superior as vegetation thins and animals congregate around water sources. Temperatures are comfortable for golf, typically 22–28°C during the day. Malaria risk is also lower in the dry season — an important consideration for international visitors.
Playing Leopard Creek in the dry season, with morning game drives, is one of the most extraordinary travel experiences South Africa offers.
Sun City and the North West Province
Best months: Year-round, avoid December–February peak heat
Sun City enjoys a warm, dry climate for most of the year. The summer months (December to February) can be extremely hot — temperatures above 35°C are not uncommon — which makes late afternoon golf uncomfortable. The winter months and the shoulder seasons of March–April and September–November are ideal.
