South Africa is consistently ranked among the world's top golf destinations, with hundreds of courses spread across extraordinary landscapes — from dramatic mountain terrain to Indian Ocean coastlines to the Big Five bushveld — the country offers a diversity of golf experience that few destinations on earth can match.
These are the seven courses that, in our view, define South African golf at its finest.
1. Leopard Creek Country Club — Malelane, Mpumalanga
Leopard Creek is, for many players, the greatest golf course in Africa. Designed by Gary Player and situated on the banks of the Crocodile River — which forms the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park — the course offers an experience that is entirely unlike anything else in the golfing world.
Hippos and crocodiles are a genuine part of the playing experience. Elephants have been known to cross the fairways. The 13th hole runs along the river's edge with Kruger National Park on the opposite bank, and on any given morning you may be watching wildlife while playing one of Africa's most coveted tee times.
The course is private and access is strictly controlled — booking through an accredited operator is essential.
2. The Links at Fancourt — George, Garden Route
The Links at Fancourt has been rated the number one golf course in Africa and consistently features in global top-100 rankings. Designed by Gary Player, it hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup in front of 30,000 spectators and global television audiences.
The course is set within the spectacular 613-hectare Fancourt estate on the outskirts of George, framed by the Outeniqua Mountains. It plays as a genuine links-style layout — a rarity in South African golf — with an emphasis on strategy, course management and shot-making over raw power.
3. Pearl Valley Golf Estate — Paarl, Western Cape
Designed by Jack Nicklaus as a Signature design — reserved for only his finest work — Pearl Valley sits among the vineyards of the Paarl valley with the Groot Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountain ranges as a backdrop that belongs in a postcard.
The course hosted the South African Open Championship and water features prominently on 14 of the 18 holes, making course management as important as ball-striking. The adjacent Four Seasons Hotel completes one of South Africa's finest golf resort experiences.
4. Arabella Golf Club — Hermanus, Western Cape
Arabella winds through the Bot River Lagoon near Hermanus — the world's whale-watching capital — with the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve forming a dramatic backdrop on every hole. Designed by Peter Matkovich, it is consistently ranked among the most scenic courses in South Africa and offers a level of natural beauty that very few courses anywhere can match.
The 17th hole is a signature par 3 that plays directly over wetlands to an island-style green — one of the most photographed holes in the Western Cape.
5. Simola Golf & Country Estate — Knysna, Garden Route
The second Jack Nicklaus Signature design in South Africa, Simola commands what is arguably the finest view of any South African golf course — the Knysna Lagoon, its famous Heads and the surrounding Knysna Forests visible from virtually every hole. The dramatic hillside terrain and significant elevation changes make it one of the most distinctive course experiences in the country.
6. Gary Player Country Club — Sun City, North West Province
Host of the Nedbank Golf Challenge for decades, the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City has welcomed Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and virtually every great golfer of the modern era. The course is demanding, dramatic and set within the extraordinary Sun City entertainment complex that provides a golf and lifestyle experience matched by few destinations in Africa.
7. Pinnacle Point Golf Club — Mossel Bay, Garden Route
Perched on cliffs 100 metres above the Indian Ocean at South Africa's southern tip, Pinnacle Point offers a setting that golfers remember for the rest of their lives. The 6th hole — a par 3 over a dramatic chasm above the ocean — is one of the most spectacular golf holes on the African continent.
